As we grow older, an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular exercise has been proven to help boost energy, maintain independence, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. If you are ready for a new exercise program, here are a few tips to get you started.
- Get medical clearance by your physician; everyone needs to start at their own level.
- Start out slowly. If you are going to walk, walk 10 to 15 minutes to begin and then gradually increase when you are ready. Walking for just 15 minutes is enough if you do it daily.
- Try to exercise at least three times per week, but don’t push yourself to the point of hurting yourself. Let your body tell you when you have done enough.
- Most of all, make it fun! Finding fun activities will motivate you to stay active.
To jump start your way to a more active lifestyle, talk to your doctor regarding medication changes, heavy lifting, and your approach to safe exercise.
