Could Someone You Love Have Sleep Apnea?

Sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, have become a significant health issue in the United States. It is estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and that 80 percent of moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) cases are undiagnosed, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association.

The most common of these disorders is obstructive sleep apnea, which can lead to high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems when left untreated. It is also associated with Type 2 diabetes and depression, and is a factor in many traffic accidents due to the persistent drowsiness suffered by many OSA patients before the disease is recognized and treated.

Do you need to be tested for sleep apnea?

  • How many of the following symptoms do you exhibit?
  • Loud snoring
  • Walking frequently in the night
  • Gasping or making choking sounds during sleep
  • Sore throat upon waking
  • Headaches in the morning
  • Tossing and turning during sleep
  • Waking feeling tired and irritable
  • Difficulty staying awake during the day

If you have a concern related to the sleep apnea symptoms listed above, or any other concerns about a pulmonary care diagnosis, you are encouraged to speak with your primary care provider to determine if now the right time for you to see a pulmonologist.

Residents of Shell Point Retirement Community have access to a host of resources available to those with sleep apnea, including a dedicated support group.
