The new Community Thrift Store for Southwest Florida Has Successful Opening Weekend!

FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 19, 2011) – Shell Point Retirement Community, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving seniors in Southwest Florida, recently opened a new venture in Southwest Florida, the Community Thrift Store in South Ft. Myers. The Grand Opening Weekend in early July was a huge success, and many visitors were finding great deals on every shelf! The Community Thrift Store is located at 15501-3 Old McGregor Road next to Planet Fitness in Miner’s Plaza (the old Kiwanis Thrift Store location) on the corner of McGregor Boulevard and Gladiolus Drive.A dedicated group of around 20 staff members and volunteers were on hand to help shoppers navigate through the store, ring up orders, and carry large purchases to vehicles in the parking lot. Teri Kollath, manager of volunteer services and The Academy for Shell Point, said, “More than 75 residents have stepped into a variety of volunteer roles at the Thrift Store – and five more residents signed up to volunteer on the first day!”

“The Summer Music Concert Series has proven to be a very popular event in Southwest Florida,” says Dawn Boren, Director of Resident Life. “We already had a great performance in June with Dan McMillion’s Jazz Orchestra, and I know that the next two concerts are sure to impress all who attend. This musical series has received rave reviews from Shell Point and Southwest Florida residents who stay in Southwest Florida through the summer and look forward to the opportunity to enjoy a variety of performances in the slower season.”

“The first day of operation at the Thrift Store was certainly a success,” said Dawn Boren, director of resident life for Shell Point. “Overall, it’s important to recognize that the positive outcome of this venture was made possible by countless acts of generosity. First of all, we’ve had a seemingly endless supply of donations from residents, staff members, and people from the surrounding community. Additionally, the Thrift Store is blessed with an outstanding staff of employees and volunteers who combined their drive and determination to pull it all together. We are looking forward to the continued success of this exciting endeavor.”

A couple from Fort Myers, Dianne and Dwain Glascock, learned about the Thrift Store Grand Opening in the newspaper. “As soon as I read about it, I knew we had to come and take a look,” said Dianne. “I’m glad we did! I’ve found some great decorative items for our home.”

“We were honored to welcome our first shoppers during our Grand Opening Weekend,” said Debbie Zeis, manager of the new store. “Offering a 25% discount was simply our way of saying ‘thank you’ for shopping with us. We hope that everyone will come back for even more great deals.”

The Community Thrift Store is located next to Planet Fitness in the Miner’s Plaza on the corner of McGregor and Gladiolus (in the old Kiwanis Thrift Store location). The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are welcome to shop as well, as make donations. Proceeds from the store will be used to help provide services to meet the needs of seniors in our area.

The store carries a wide array of items for all shoppers, including furniture, home décor, household goods, CDs, books, games, adult and children’s clothing, jewelry, and more. Plus, this store offers items that are not typically found in resell stores such as building supplies, construction materials, appliances, and fixtures. When an individual or an organization donates items to the store, they receive a tax deductible receipt.
