SHELL POINT ACADEMY CLASS OFFERS THREE SESSIONS THAT COVER THE HISTORY OF EUROPE

FORT MYERS, Fla. ( December 28, 2012 )

The Academy at Shell Point invites Southwest Florida residents to participate in three informative sessions on Europe in Crisis by Thomas Tyrell, retired international lawyer, and former economic advisor to the UK government. Tickets are required for each session, and the first session will take place on Wednesday, January 23, at 10am, in the Grand Cypress Room of The Woodlands at Shell Point Retirement Community. Session two and three will take place on January 24 and January 25, at 10am in the Grand Cypress Room of the Woodlands at Shell Point. Tickets are $10 each and to purchase tickets for these presentations, please call (239) 489-8472.

During his series of presentations, Tyrell will try to make some sense for Americans of the economic and political crisis gripping all of Europe. Allied victory in 1945 was not the end but only the beginning of the end for millions in Europe, to whom the years 1946-50 were as dreadful as war itself. The Treaty of Rome 1947 which established a European Economic Community (the EEC) was seen by the Founding Fathers in France, Italy and the Benelux as only the first step on the road to a politically United States of Europe. However that was not, nor ever has been, the motivation for the countries of northern Europe, in particular Great Britain, who sought only an economic Union. SHELL POINT ACADEMY CLASS REFLECTS ON CALVIN COOLIDGE

FORT MYERS, Fla. ( December 27, 2012 )

The Academy at Shell Point invites Southwest Florida residents to attend an informative presentation by David Serra on our 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge. This is a free presentation; however space is limited so reservations are required. This event will take place on Thursday, January 10, at 2pm, in the Grand Cypress Room of The Woodlands at Shell Point Retirement Community.

David Serra is the Executive Director of the Coolidge Foundation located in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. During this presentation, Serra will offer some visual imagery of Coolidge’s homeplace and the environment that shaped his life and public service, including his presidency. Serra will also discuss Coolidge’s philosophy as President, as well as presidential history in general. Historically misunderstood, Calvin Coolidge’s policies brought the United States great prosperity after World War I. Join us for a bit of a civics lesson that illuminates the man who said, “We review the past not in order that we may return to it, but that we may find in what direction, straight and clear, it points into the future.”

“We are looking forward to reviewing the life of Calvin Coolidge, as well as our country’s presidential history, with such a distinguished guest lecturer,” said Teri Kollath, Manager of Academy and Volunteer Services. For your reservations, or for more information, please call (239) 489-8472.
