Employees Pass Halfway Mark In “Biggest Loser” Program

Shell Point Hosts WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM to Encourage Wellness

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 1, 2009) — Shell Point Retirement Community is hosting the organization’s first annual weight-loss program for employees and has named it after the popular reality TV show, Biggest Loser. The Shell Point program began on March 30 and is set to occur over a three month period, ending on June 22. The goal for Shell Point participants is to lose a total of 1,000 pounds as a team. There are 112 employees from 21 departments participating in the program.

“We offer a number of wellness programs for our residents and we thought it would be a great idea to use some of those resources to encourage our employees to develop healthier lifestyles as well,” said Mary Franklin, resort services manager for Shell Point.

Shell Point developed its Biggest Loser program as a 12 week program, which is run by personal trainer Christie Smith who works for Shell Point. Participants meet weekly to weigh-in, as well as have access to a weekly “employee boot-camp” fitness class lead by Smith that allows any Shell Point employee to take part in a rigorous fitness class. Employees in the program are watching what they eat, and utilizing other fitness opportunities, such as gym memberships and discounts, to help reach their personal, and team, goals.

“Losing weight can be a difficult task when you are trying to do it alone,” said Smith. “Having an environment where everyone is working together as a team is helpful, because you have the support of your teammates, and you are not making this journey alone.”

So far, the employees in the program have passed the halfway mark, losing more than 544 pounds as a team, and are well on their way to make it to their 1,000 pound goal. “It has been so rewarding to see the employees go through the process and realize how close they are to their own goals, I love working with them every week,” said Smith.
