CUTLINES: Photo 1: Florida SouthWestern State College Professor Adrian Kerr will join the Academy of Lifelong Learning for a series on “Vietnam: Its History and Culture,” taking place June 4, June 11 and June 18 at Shell Point.

Photo 2: The Academy of Lifelong Learning will welcome award-winning author and historian, Robert Macomber, for a workshop on successful writing, taking place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 at Shell Point.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (May 29, 2018) – The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point Retirement Community invites the Southwest Florida community to attend its June Academy classes, which will feature informative discussions on Vietnamese history and successful writing practices. Classes will take place on June 4, June 11, June 18 and June 23 at Shell Point in Fort Myers.

“Vietnam: Its History and Culture” will trace the origins of the Vietnamese people and their heritage during a series of lectures, presented by Florida SouthWestern State College Professor Adrian Kerr. The first session, “Prehistory & Early Northern Kingdoms,” will delve into the foundation of the early northern kingdoms, colonization and the rise of communism. The second session, “The French War, American War, and Present-day Vietnam,” will utilize a sequence of photographs to depict how the Viet heritage has produced a vibrant, colorful and unique religion. The series will conclude with “Da Nang and the Ancient Capital Hue,” illustrating the still-evident divide between the North and South.

Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point offers May classes on history, environment and politics

– The Academy of Lifelong Learning at Shell Point Retirement Community invites the public to attend May classes that will discuss the environment, politics and history.

At 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, Kristie Anders, education director at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, will present “Tides and Currents” in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands at Shell Point, 14441 Woodsong Lane in Fort Myers. This presentation will explore waves, tides and currents of the sea. During the lecture, Anders will explain not only what influences the tides, but also how they affect Southwest Florida residents. A short film by the Captiva Island Historical Society, entitled “Santiva,” will also be shown.

The Academy of Lifelong Learning will also welcome Lee County Supervisor of Elections Tommy Doyle for a free presentation at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, May 19 in the Social Center on The Island at Shell Point, 15101 Shell Point Blvd. in Fort Myers. During his class, entitled “Lee County Supervisor of Elections Preparing for Mid-Term Elections,” Doyle will focus on politics and upcoming elections. As a lifelong resident of Lee County, Doyle has a deep-rooted passion for the county’s history and traditions. His fundamental belief in a representative form of government led him to run for office, and he was elected Supervisor of Elections in 2016.

Shell Point hosts Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi March 12 To Address Audience on Medical Breakthroughs in Health Care

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 19, 2018) – Shell Point continues its third annual 2018 Medical Breakthroughs and Discoveries Series with a presentation by Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, to be held Monday, March 12, at 7 p.m. in The Village Church Auditorium at Shell Point. This educational health care presentation, entitled “Reducing Risk for Alzheimer’s disease by Building a Resilient Brain,” is free and open to the public. During this presentation, attendees will learn about the latest advances and breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s disease. The New York Times best-selling author and researcher will also uncover the best methods to building a resilient brain.

Tanzi obtained bachelor’s degrees in microbiology and history at the University of Rochester in 1980, and his Ph.D. in neurobiology at Harvard Medical School in 1990. In his research achievements, Tanzi served on the team that was the first to find a disease gene for Huntington’s disease using human genetic markers, helping to launch the field of neurogenetics.
