Shell Point hosts Dr. Malissa Wood March 26 to address medical breakthroughs in health care

 

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 13, 2019) – Shell Point hosts the final session of its fourth annual 2019 Medical Breakthroughs & Discoveries Series with a presentation by Dr. Malissa Wood of Massachusetts General Hospital at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26 at the Village Church Auditorium at Shell Point. This educational health care presentation, entitled “Make This the Healthiest Year of Your Life Yet!”is free and open to the public. To learn more or to register, call 239-433-7936.

During this final presentation, Wood will discuss the benefits of exercise toward reducing effects of aging and improving heart health and overall well-being. She will also review helpful steps for adopting a healthy lifestyle, stress management and resiliency tips.

Wood is a full-time clinician, researcher and author with more than 20 years of experience, and currently serves on the leadership council of the American College of Cardiology Women in Cardiology Committee and is the governor-elect for the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

This presentation is part of Shell Point’s 2019 Medical Breakthroughs & Discoveries series, an annual community health care speaker program that serves as a resource for residents in the greater Fort Myers area. The acclaimed Boilermaker Jazz Band is led by Paul Cosentino on clarinet, full-time bandleader who founded the band in 1988 at Carnegie Mellon University. Jennifer McNulty lends her smooth and sultry vocal stylings to ballads, standards and bubblin’ swing numbers. The Boilermaker Jazz Band has performed at major international venues, including Lincoln Center and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City and the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland.

The Sanibel Trio is comprised of performers Renata Arado on violin, Espen Lilleslatten on viola, and Erik Entwistle on piano. Arado served as principal second violin of Norway’s Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra for 13 years, while her husband, Lilleslatten, served as concertmaster. Lilleslatten is an associate professor of violin at Louisiana State University. Both teach and perform at the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado and perform as a duo, including a recital at Carnegie Hall. Entwistle has been performing and teaching for more than 30 years. His recordings feature the music of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu.

Shell Point presents 2019 Shell Point Quilt Show March 2-4

 FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 21, 2019) – Shell Point Retirement Community invites the public to join its 2019 Shell Point Quilt Show, “Great Expectations,” taking place from Saturday, March 2 through Monday, March 4 at Shell Point.

Hosted by the Shell Point Quilters, the biennial quilt show will showcase a beautiful display of quilts, lovingly and artistically created by residents of Shell Point. The custom creations exemplify the time-honored traditions passed from generation to generation, expressed through the detailed work of the quilters. A number of large quilts and smaller quilted items in a variety of traditional and contemporary designs will be on display and available for purchase throughout the event.

“From heirloom quilts to modern creations, the variety and workmanship will impress even experienced quilters,” said Debbie Melchi, Shell Point resident and avid quilter.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 20, 2019) – Shell Point Retirement Community continues the Performing Arts program of its 2018-2019 Fine and Performing Arts Series with a performance by Vienna Boys Choir, taking place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at The Village Church auditorium on The Island at Shell Point, 15100 Shell Point Blvd. in Fort Myers. The Vienna Boys Choir presents a group of 25 singers between the ages of 10 and 14, performing a range of medieval, contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder form the core of this repertoire, along with the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music, including waltzes and polkas by Lanner, Lehár and Strauss.

With roots dating back five centuries and members hailing from dozens of nations, the Vienna Boys Choir is comprised of 100 choristers, divided into four touring choirs. The groups spend nine to 11 weeks on tour, performing annually for almost half a million people in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Born in Slovakia, Fancovic began his musical career at an early age as a soloist with the Conservatory’s Symphonic Orchestra and Bratislava Chamber Orchestra, winning first prize in the National Conservatory Competition. He received his master’s degree in piano performance at Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

In addition to his accomplishments as a classical pianist, Fancovic also has performed his own jazz transcriptions and renditions of early jazz piano music. He has been awarded prizes in the J.N. Hummel Piano Competition, held in Slovakia, as well as the Mariánské Lázně International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition and the Beethoven’s Hradec International Music Competition in the Czech Republic.

(Oct. 24, 2018) – Shell Point Retirement Community kicks off the Concerts and Conversations program of its 2018-2019 Fine and Performing Arts Series with a performance by pianist, David Crohan, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands at Shell Point, 15100 Shell Point Blvd. in Fort Myers. Blind since birth, Crohan has become one of the most versatile pianists performing today, crossing the traditional boundaries between classical and jazz music with ease and sophistication. Crohan displayed musical precociousness at the age of three, and later earned his master’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory of Music. His distinguished audiences have included Bill and Hillary Clinton, Lady Bird Johnson, James Taylor, Carly Simon and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

During this performance, Crohan will include music from his vast repertoire that spans from Beethoven, Scott Joplin and Andrew Lloyd Webber to the Beatles and Billy Joel. The program will draw on Crohan’s extensive classical training and expertise in music from bygone eras.
