FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 26, 2012) –
The second speaker in Shell Point’s 2012 Speaker Series will be Richard Picciotto, who survived the World Trade Center Collapse on September 11, 2001. This presentation will take place on Friday, February 3, at 7:00pm in The Village Church Auditorium on The Island at Shell Point. The theme for this year’s series is “In The Face of Courage”, and all presenters have overcome a range of adversities. All residents of Southwest Florida are invited to attend, but tickets are required.
“We are so happy to welcome all the speakers in the 2012 Speaker Series, and feel that all who attend the presentations will be inspired and moved by the emotion of each story,” said Dawn Boren, director of resident life for Shell Point. “The speakers lined up in this particular series have faced many different challenges and they have all been able to look at the positives of those experiences.”

Actor to Present “An Evening with CS Lewis”
FORT MYERS, Fla. (January 16, 2012) – On Sunday, February 19, British actor David Payne will offer “An Evening with CS Lewis” as part of the 2011-2012 Season of Praise Concert Series at Shell Point. This performance will take place at 6:15pm in The Village Church Auditorium on The Island at Shell Point.
“Our residents enjoy all the fine and performing arts, and we are very excited to bring Mr. Payne here for this dramatic theatrical performance,” says Pastor Randy Woods, minister of worship and music for The Village Church. “This is sure to be a unique presentation as we hear from one of the great thinkers and writers of the 20th Century.”

The Academy at Shell Point welcomes back Award winning maritime author and lecturer Robert Macomber to present three informative sessions on The Forgotten War. These presentations are open to the public, and tickets are required for each session. The first session will take place on Monday, January 28, at 2:00 p.m. in the Grand Cypress Room of The Woodlands at Shell Point Retirement Community. Session two and three will take place on February 4 and 11, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in the Grand Cypress Room of the Woodlands at Shell Point. Tickets are $10 each and to purchase tickets for these presentations, please call (239) 489-8472.
In the first session, Macomber will cover an overview of Germany’s Pacific Empire from the 1870’s to 1914, which stretched across a huge area from China to Saipan, New Guinea to Samoa, and greatly influenced the rest of the Pacific. The second session includes the story of the Imperial German Navy’s Asiatic Squadron and its naval campaign across the Pacific in the opening months of World War One. The final session in the series begins after the initial carnage in 1914, as World War One in the Pacific changed into a cat-and-mouse game between the German raiders and the Royal Navy. Shell Point Retirement Community welcomes The Diamonds with the Orlando Jazz Orchestra as part of the 10th Annual Fine and Performing Arts Concert Series. This performance will take place on Friday, February 8 at 7:30pm.
In 1957 The Diamonds released an instant hit called Little Darlin’. The song has been dubbed “the National Anthem of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and has sold approximately 20 million copies to date. The Diamonds’ many accomplishments over the years have included 33 appearances on American Bandstand, induction into the Doo-Wop Hall of Fame and Vocal Group Hall of Fame, 16 hit records, three certified Gold Records, and songs featured on the soundtracks for American Graffiti and Happy Days.
The Diamonds will be accompanied by the Orlando Jazz Orchestra, made up of the best jazz musicians in central Florida. Musical director Greg Parnell is the former road manager and drummer for the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He has also performed with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Les Brown’s Band of Renown, and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
“The combined talents of these two performers is sure to make an amazing concert for attendees,” said Dawn Boren, director of resident life. “The 10th annual Fine and Performing Arts Concert series has been a great success so far!”

This event, Why was Modern Art Significant? and How do You Understand Contemporary Art?, will take place on Friday, January 27, in the Grand Cypress Room at The Woodlands in Shell Point Retirement Community. Space is very limited, so tickets are required to attend, and can be purchased for $25 a piece by calling (239) 454-2054.
Lecturer Joanna Coke will take us through the redefinition of art from the 1890s to the present in this two session lunch and learn that shows us how the world’s cultural changes affected the artistic movements. In addition to the two sessions on how art is significant and how to understand it, attendees will enjoy a boxed lunch with the presenter.
