Importance of a Yearly Physical

By Stacey Daniels, RN Manager, Shell Point Retirement Community

As I was driving into work yesterday I happened to notice the little reminder sticker in the upper left corner of my windshield, and then it hit me: I forgot to have my oil changed! I’ve been driving my car around for the last two months with sludge in its veins because I forgot to get the oil changed. Can you imagine? I’m not usually so forgetful, but life has been so hectic lately.

Does this sound familiar? We all get so caught up in the daily activities occupying our thoughts we sometimes forget to do the routine maintenance. Many of us forget that an annual physical is the same thing for your body as getting the oil changed in your car. We can’t neglect to do the daily maintenece that allows our engine to run smoothly and prevents breakdowns on the road of life.

A recommended annual check-up includes checking for high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol/triglycerides, an annual pap smear (if you are female), an annual prostate check (if you are male), and a fasting blood sugar test to screen for diabetes.  It isn’t complicated – just pick up the phone and make an appointment with your personal physician. Remembering a healthy lifestyle goes a long way in keeping your engine running smoothly for a lifetime!
