For the Love of Fitness

By Melanie Brod, Fitness Coordinator

A sedentary lifestyle is one of the top risk factors for heart disease. Fortunately, it’s a risk factor that you can do something about. Regular exercise, especially aerobic exercise, has many benefits.

By doing regular exercise, you can strengthen your heart and cardiovascular system, improve circulation, and help your body make better use of oxygen. Exercise can increase energy levels so you can do more activities without becoming tired or short of breath. In addition, exercise can lower blood pressure, improve muscle tone and strength, increase balance and joint flexibility, strengthen bones, and reduce body fat. Regular exercise can reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and depression; it can also boost self-image and self-esteem. Working to achieve a healthy heart will also make you look fit and feel great.

The best types of exercises to achieve a healthy heart include stretching, aerobic movement, and muscle strengthening. To jump start your way to a healthy heart, talk to your doctor regarding medication changes, heavy lifting, and your approach to safe exercise.
