FORT MYERS, FL - With more golf courses than most any other county in America, Lee County, Florida is a duffer's dream. What if you could assemble a Dream 18 of the best and most challenging holes in the area?

This is exactly what NBC-2's sports anchor Tom James has endeavored to do, profiling a different "hall-of-fame" hole every week. The fourth hole of his Dream 18 is at the Shell Point Golf Club; it's the par-3 seventh hole.

"We're honored that Tom came out here and chose one of our holes to be on his dream list," said Jim Carpenter, the Shell Point Golf Club's head professional. "We have a distinctive design, and that's one of the holes that gets a lot of comments from our guests."

The Shell Point Golf Club is a championship course that has been open to the public since 2000 (for tee times, call 239-433-9790). Its location, off Summerlin Road just two miles before the Sanibel Causeway, is a popular draw for tourists visiting Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. The facility includes a grass driving range and practice green, lessons available, and a fully-stocked pro shop and snack bar all open to the public. The rates are also the most competitive available in the area.

The seventh hole at the Shell Point Golf Club is 241 yards from the back tees (the course has five tee boxes on every hole). Water frames both sides, with no fairway or margin of error. The fringe surrounding the green is also cut very short, so tee shots that end up short of the green often roll back quite a distance.

On this particular day, Tom James' drive landed right in the water, leading to a triple-bogey 6. Jim Carpenter fared a little better, with a bogey 4.

"The people at Shell Point have been delightful," Tom James remarked in his televised report.

"I think whether you play from the gold tees or the white tees, you'll enjoy any round you play here at Shell Point," said Jim Carpenter.
