Salute to Shakespeare 2016 (sessions 3 of 7)

Comedies – “Love’s Labours Lost,” with its diverse array of story lines and characters, will be highlighted in this session. One of the works Shakespeare created entirely from his own imagination, this play, according to one source, “is a showpiece of linguistic bravura, containing between 200 and 240 puns and quibbles, most of them based on contemporary events and courtly in-jokes.” Through the work’s plot and characters, Shakespeare challenges many conventions and expectations of the Elizabethan era.

Middle East Turmoil (FLL22)

Thu

February

18th

The Middle East has always been an enigma to observers in the West. It was the birthplace of three of the world’s major religions and their religious books. It has been fought over for more than 4,000 years. Many nations and great empires have risen and collapsed, whole tribes of people have completely disappeared, and still, to this day, it is torn by political unrest and conflict. What is the background of such an important yet volatile part of the world?

To understand this, we will analyze the history and culture of the great powers that have ruled the region. We will examine the key historical events that led to the political and religious turmoil we see today. We will investigate some of the most infamous milestones on this long journey. And we will complete the picture by reviewing the current conflicts that continue to engulf the region, and spill into other areas.

Presenter: Professor Adrian Kerr

Irrera Brothers Duo

Mon

February

22nd

Hailed by the late world-renowned violinist and pedagogue, Zvi Zeitlin, as “two gifted boys,” the critically acclaimed Irrera Brothers Duo has captivated audiences throughout the United States and abroad. Joseph and John have performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and Rochester’s Eastman Theatre.

Pianist Joseph and violinist John each began their musical education at the age of five. Their talents and gifts for music were apparent from the beginning, as each advanced remarkably at his chosen instrument. Six years later, the brothers entered the Eastman School of Music’s Pre-College Division, where they received a multi-faceted musical education.

In addition to their weekly private lessons, Joseph’s and John’s studies during these formative years included counterpoint and music history, as well as coaching as a piano/violin duo from esteemed Eastman faculty, including the Ying Quartet. Each brother earned a diploma from the Eastman Preparatory Division in his respective instrument, with additional diplomas in music theory, tenor saxophone (Joseph) and percussion (John).

Subsequently, both remained at Eastman, earning Bachelor of Music degrees in Performances with distinction. While John continued at Eastman for a Masters degree, Joseph pursued graduate studies at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University.

In May 2014, for the first time in Eastman’s history, this distinguished institution conferred Doctor of Music Arts degrees on these siblings at the same graduation ceremony. Currently, both Joseph and John serve on the faculty of Eastman’s Community Music School, the same department in which they began their musical journeys.
