Muscat – Jewel of the Persian Gulf
Tuesday, June 18 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Muscat, the beautiful historic capital of Oman, has been an important trading port since Roman times. Professor Adrian Kerr will offer a review of its fascinating history of being conquered by the Persians and then becoming an important eastern foothold of the Portuguese Empire. The rocky Al Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape and provide a spectacular backdrop as ships enter port. Unlike other Gulf capitals, Muscat has truly retained its old world charm. It is spotless and well run. Highlights include Muttrah Corniche, the old Portuguese Fort, and the Sultan’s palace.
Tickets for this course are $10 each and can be purchased by calling (239) 489-8472.
Salalah – Ancient Capital of Incense
Tuesday, June 25 • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Oman’s ancient incense capital is an oasis with lush vegetation resulting from seasonal monsoons. The city's roads wind through groves of coconut, papaya, and banana trees, and roadside stands sell fresh fruit and coconut water. This tropical atmosphere is in striking contrast to the otherwise arid landscapes of the south coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Marco Polo visited in the 13th Century, even the Queen of Sheba fell under the spell of the area and sent frankincense to impress King Solomon. Join Professor Adrian Kerr to learn more this history of this ancient paradise and how, today, it draws visitors with beautiful sandy beaches, cultural history and archaeology, and natural diversity.
